Vernon C. Doty passed away at age 96 on June 23, 2019, at the Pines of Gladwin Nursing Home after a challenging past few weeks.
Vernon was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on July 4, 1922. He was a decorated corporal in the United States Army and proudly served in the 422 nd Infantry Regiment, Alpha Company. Vernon shared vivid memories of his participation in the 3 rd wave of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France and was full of pride for his role in helping defeat the German forces.
He began his working life as a machinist and later formed his own advertising firm; Doty, Phillips & Laing Inc. His expertise in mechanical illustrating and design engineering made his company a real Michigan small business success.
Vernon and his wife Marion moved to Sugar Springs in 1996, building their dream home and enjoying all of the amenities afforded to them in this community. Vern was a dedicated morning coffee attendee at Larry’s Bait Store and he formed many friendships during this time.
Vernon is preceded in death by his wife Doris, their daughter Pam, his second wife Marion Bauman and step son Brace Bauman, and son-in-law Rodger Greenway. He is survived by daughter Sheri Greenway, step daughter Suzanne (Bill) Shellenbarger, granddaughter Shannon Rhodes, grandsons Brett Weiss, Ryan and Rodger Greenway, several great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
Services will be held at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Battle Creek, Michigan on July 22,2019 at 1p.m.
