Roger Smith

September 11, 1931 — May 4, 2017

Roger S. Smith, age 85, passed away on Thursday, May 4th 2017 at St. Mary's of Saginaw. Roger was born in Kalamazoo, MI to Violete "Elaine" (Shug) Smith and Robert M. Smith and was the oldest of four children. Roger served in the United States Army during the Korean war working in communications. He worked for the Saginaw News for 21 years and later moved on to The Mid Michigan Medical Center - Midland, where he retired in 1992 as a maintenance supervisor. Roger was deeply loved by his family and friends and greatly cared for by his sons Trayton and Brett Smith, his brother in-law Jim Black and his special niece Laurie Black. Through his life and even through his last days with his family you could always hear his love for big band music because he was always singing, he sang til his last day with his family. Roger was preceded in death by his wife who was the love of his life, Janet M. "Black" Smith, his parents, and his brother Durrell L. Smith. He is survived by his two sons, Trayton (Darcy) Smith of Gladwin, Brett (Jenifer) Smith, his two grand daughters Jasmin and Daniela Smith, his two grand sons Ronan and Toryn Smith, all of Jackson. His two sisters, Moyne "Smith" O'Keefe, Myra (Jerry) "Smith" Lewis, both of Saginaw, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family will greet friends on May 11th 2017 from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. for visitation, followed by services on May 12th 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home in Beaverton, MI. The family asks that instead of sending flowers, Roger would have liked that donations be made to a local animal rescue or shelter of donator's choice. Roger loved animals and had always rescued his pets over the years from local rescues. He will be deeply missed.
