Richard Downing

Richard E. Downing, age 94, of Beaverton, passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025, at home, surrounded by his loving children. Richard, affectionately known as Dick, was born on January 12, 1931, to Fred and Julia (Hitchcock) Downing. On June 15, 1955, Dick married the love of his life, Bonetta (Bonnie) Zimmerman. Together, they shared 67 years filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories, until she preceded him in death in 2022. Dick was a dedicated Army Veteran, who proudly served his country during the Korean War. After his service, he spent many years working as a chemist and electrician at Dow Chemical until his well-deserved retirement. 

Richard was a quiet, faithful man of God. In his early years, he enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his dad. In his later years, riding his motorcycle, peddling his bicycle in circles around the kids, playing cards, reading, and playing chess-when he had a worthy opponent. Most recently, Dick enjoyed sitting on the porch, soaking in the warmth of the sun, napping, and the companionship of his loving pet, Mikey. Most of all, he loved his family. He cherished every moment spent sharing family dinners and being surrounded by the people he loved. 

He is survived by his children: Catherine Poole, Susan (Stanley) Pope, Jami (Patrick) McComb, Richard (Susan) Downing and Linda (Dave) Linton; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister: Debra (Brian) Genaw; and his faithful companion: Mikey. 

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife: Bonnetta; parents: Fred and Julia; and sisters: Nora Jean Hughes and Bonita Gedney.

Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 3:00 P.M. at the Beaverton Baptist Church.
