John S. Shaffer, 101, of Gladwin, Michigan passed away with his family by his side at the Gladwin Nursing & Rahab on Saturday, April 28, 2018. He was born in Indiana on November 15, 1916 the son of Oliver & Mamie (Finnegan) Shaffer. He married Dolores Harber who predeceased him in 2000. He had lived in Gladwin County for the last 21 years, previously residing in Edenville, Michigan. John was an avid fast pitch softball player. He played softball and basketball for the Zollner Pistons in Fort Wayne, Indiana, which later became the Detroit Pistons basketball team. He later played for the Dow AC’s in Midland, Michigan, softball teams. In 1951 he was an all-star second baseman for Dow AC’s softball team that won the 1951 World Championship. He was employed with Dow Chemical until his retirement working in telephone communications. He officiated many High School sporting events throughout Michigan. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gladwin and the Knights of Columbus Council #5280. He was a member of the M.H.S.A.A. Michigan High School Athletic Association. He is survived by his sons: Jack (Carol) Shaffer of Edenville; Robert (Debi) Shaffer of Midland; Steve (Melody) Shaffer of Burton; daughter: Ann (Gary) Myers of Gladwin; 17 grandchildren; several great grandchildren & great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife: Dolores; son: Jim; parents; 7 brothers & sisters. Funeral Mass will be conducted by Fr. J. Marcel Portelli on Thursday, May 3, 2018, 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gladwin, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, from 3-8:00 P.M. at Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home, Gladwin, Michigan. He will be laid to rest Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Midland, Michigan.
