Jerry Smith

June 29, 1938 — August 4, 2023

Jerry Smith, 85, of Gladwin, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023, at the Gladwin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on June 29, 1938, the son of David and Dorothy (Goheen) Smith in Gladwin. On December 20, 1959, he was united in marriage to Betty Schuler. She preceded him in death in 2017. He worked for Eckerly Tool in Roscommon until his retirement. Together Jerry and Betty volunteered at the Gladwin County Genealogical Society where Jerry served as Treasurer. He was also active in the Gladwin Friends of the Library.

Jerry did a lot of family research and was able to apply and receive certificates for his Civil War ancestors, and Pioneers of Gladwin County. A copy of his research for these is in our book room in the “Gladwin Co. Aisle”. He is very proud of these ancestors. Jerry himself had a good historical knowledge of Gladwin County, able to answer many questions from patrons coming into the genealogy room.

He is survived by his children: Candy (Tom) Johnson and Scott Smith; grandchildren: Danielle (Nathan) Johnson, Dustin (Jessica) Johnson, Kazandra (Tony Frasher) Smith, Tristen (Nicole) Duford, and Kasey Smith; great grandchildren: Tori, Bryce, Ryder, Chloe, Drew, Alexander, Owen, Samantha, Greg, Lizzie, and Averee; sisters: Rose Smith and Carolyn Corlew; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter: Penny Smith; Daughter in-law: Sharon Smith; grandson: Danl Johnson; brother: Ray Smith; and sister: Yvonne Corlew.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, 1:00 P.M. at Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home, Gladwin. Visitation will be held from 10:30 A.M. until the time of service. He will be laid to rest at Butman Twp. Cemetery, Gladwin. Memorial Contributions may be made according to Hospice Compassus. www.hall-kokotovichfuneralhome.com
