The world dimmed on August 10, 2023, as Janice Kay Vedrode, journeyed onward at the age of 63 after a brief, fierce, and courageous battle with cancer. Born Janice Kay Thorington in Saginaw, MI, on March 30, 1960, Janice embodied unconditional love, compassion, and authenticity throughout her life. She shared with the world an infectious smile, radiant energy, a larger-than-life personality, and a quick-witted sense of humor that was refreshing and unforgettable.
From her earliest footsteps to the twilight of her journey, Janice's life was a mosaic of determination and resilience. She was a beacon of inspiration, showing that with a resolute spirit, one can achieve greatness. Janice's drive and unwavering perseverance led her to become the first in her family to earn a college degree, a feat she was extremely proud of. For over 17 years, she graced the Meijer Stores family with her presence, but her true calling was found in her work at Hemlock Public Schools. There, she nurtured the minds of special education and autistic children, forever leaving an indelible mark on their hearts.
Her love story with Kurt F. Vedrode was one for the ages. High school sweethearts who married on February 2nd, 1979, they were inseparable lovers – each other's compass through life's journey. Their bond forged in the fires of young love, and it only grew stronger with time. Over their 44 years of marriage, they built together a world that was bold and bright, filled with shared joys that were as vast as the universe itself. They treasured date nights with champagne and scratch-offs, relaxing under the stars in their hot tub, sharing laughter and smiles that lit up their world, grilling up a storm, trips to the casino and embarking on adventures of travel and memorable cruises.
Janice's spirit was most alive in her role as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She poured her heart into her children: Ryan (Skye) Vedrode, Chase (Jason) Vedrode-Jones, and Troy (Kayla) Vedrode. Her pride knew no bounds as she witnessed them flourish. Whether they were near or far, she adored keeping up with their lives as they blossomed, guiding them with unwavering support, love, and authenticity. Often times she'd call to say,"I just wanted to hear the sound of your voice, babydoll." Her legacy continued to grow with the arrival of her adored grandchildren: Luke, Liam, Renner, and Riley. Janice was the glue that bound her family together, a role she embraced with unmatched devotion. Always striving to be there for anyone, especially in their time of need.
Janice leaves behind a void that can never be filled. Her soulmate, Kurt, parents Harold and Mary Jane Thorington, and her cherished children, along with her beloved grandchildren, sister-in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends – all of whom are left with cherished memories. She is reunited with her brothers, Harold and Paul Thorington, and her sister, Diane Thorington-Sas, in the embrace of eternity.
Janice's spirit will forever dance in the sunlight, and her love will forever resonate in the lives she touched. The legacy she crafted lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. She truly was one of a kind.
