Gail Jeanne Schur of Grayling, Michigan passed away at the age of 79 years at home with Hospice care on February 21, 2022. The daughter of the late Roger E and Dorothy M McMahon, Gail (McMahon) Schur was born on July 30, 1942, in Pontiac, Michigan. She was raised on a dairy farm in Beaverton, Michigan. Graduating from Beaverton High School, Class of 1960, Gail participated in girls’ basketball, drama, bowling, and was a majorette for the marching band.
She married Roger A. Strong on December 4, 1959, at the Beaverton Church of the Brethren. They lived in Merrill where they raised their family and attended the Merrill Congregational Christian Church where she and her husband sang in the choir. She also played piano. She retired from Merrill Schools in 1996 with 30 years of service as a custodian and bus driver and resided in beautiful Grand Marais, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula for many years.
Gail enjoyed long walks in nature, hunting and fishing, camping, snowmobiling, swimming, gardening, and canning. She was a Green Bay Packers football fan and enjoyed watching Detroit Tigers baseball. She liked dancing, and listening to country music. She proudly celebrated her Irish Heritage especially St. Patrick’s Day. One of her favorite places to visit was the Cabin at East Lake in the Upper Peninsula.
Gail loved her family. She was humorous, quick to share jokes and storytelling. She enjoyed watching The Waltons on television with her cat, Mary Jane and her caregivers. She also found comfort reciting the 23 rd Psalm and The Lord’s Prayer before bed.
Surviving her are children: Teresa Kirchoff, of Grayling, and Susan (Steven) Bridges of Chesaning, Michigan; eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, two great-great granddaughters. A sister, Glenna Rappley, of Midland, and nieces also survive her. Visitation will take place at the Hall-Kokotovich funeral home in Beaverton on February 27, 2022 from 5:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will take place at the Beaverton Church of the Brethren with the Reverend Joe Andrist officiating on February 28, 2022, 11:00 A.M. A grave side comital service will follow at the Tobacco Township Cemetery, her final resting place. A luncheon will follow at the church.
