Donald E Welch, age 97, passed away on Thursday August 29, 2024 at the Brook in Gladwin. He was born on May 24, 1927, the son of Leslie and Eloise (Duryea) Welch in Carson City, MI. Don attended Chapel Dam Country School, and then Gladwin High School. After high school Don began working at Dow Chemical Company until he was drafted into the Air Force. On the day he was to report, September 2, 1945 he awoke to hear the good news on the radio that the war was over. As a result, he was given an extra week off. He was stationed in Japan and South Korea.
After returning home, he fell in love with, and married Margaret Kinne. They shared 75 years of love and memories together until she preceded him in death in 2023. Don continued his career at Dow Chemical until his retirement. He found great satisfaction in his role as Superintendent of the Handicapped Department. Don was active in the Methodist Church in Gladwin and later in Midland. He served on the Gladwin City Council, and participated in several of their projects. Don and Margaret really enjoyed parenting, and were very “hands on” with activities as their kids were growing. Don loved coaching Little League, and they both were the leaders of the MYF youth group at church. Don’s backyard ice rink was a real hit with the neighborhood kids! His hobbies included flying, trout fishing, and building two of their family homes.
Don is survived by his children, Cynthia (Victor) Clore and Daniel Welch; grandchildren; Sarah (Tim) Rehberg, Rachel Clore (Ken), Jason Welch (Samantha), Jennifer (Jeff) Radar, and great grandchildren; Dakota Moore, Jacob Moore, and Emmalee Osciak.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Eloise Welch, his wife Margaret Welch, daughter-in-law Sharon Welch, and siblings and their spouses:Judson (Carol) Taylor, Betty (Wayne) Underwood, and Robert (Jean) Welch.
A memorial service for Don will be held on Saturday October 5th at Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home in Gladwin. Visitation will be at 1:00 pm, and Service at 2:00 pm.
