Carl Moore

November 18, 1933 — January 17, 2025

Carl Moore, age 91, of Gladwin, passed away on Friday, January 17, 2025. He was born on November 18, 1933, the son of Charles Carl and Helen (Davey) Varovsky, in Ferndale, MI. On February 14, 1983, Carl married the love of his life, Alice Bergeron, in Cheboygan. Together, they shared many years filled with love and cherished memories. Carl had a love for music, he enjoyed playing and singing music.

Carl served as a radar jammer aboard a B-29 bomber during the Korean War. He claimed the distinction of ending the war for the United States. Carl said, “The war ended within a month of my arrival.” In that time he did take part in four combat missions over Korea from the U.S. air base on Okinawa. A combat mission usually lasted a couple of hours and included 17 other B-29’s. Carl’s job was to jam the radar signals coming from enemy anti-aircraft instillations. Carl mentioned that on his first mission he thought that they were flying in a thunderstorm. Someone on the aircraft informed him that it was actually flack from anti aircraft guns.

Carl joined the Air Force at the age of 17. His brother, who was his hero, had also joined at 17 several years before. “I always wanted to follow in his footsteps,” said Carl. After spending nine months in the Korean Theater Carl returned to the U.S. to complete his obligation. Upon discharge at 21 he took advantage of the G.I. Bill and graduated with honors from Wayne State University with an accounting degree. He went on to become a CPA with Arthur Young. Carl eventually moved to Gladwin County where he enjoyed a long career with RE/MAX, where he was awarded membership in the prestigious RE/MAX Hall of Fame for earning more than $1 million in commissions during his career and being named the top selling agent in Gladwin County. Carl looked back fondly on his military experience. “It made a man out of me,” he said.
