Barbara Schafer

November 16, 1945 — February 18, 2022

Barbara Schafer, 76 of Gladwin, MI passed away at Mid-Michigan Medical Center Gladwin, MI on February 18 th , in the year of our Lord 2022. She was born November 16, 1945, in Bay City, MI to Kenneth and Ruth (Dedo) Hetherington. Barb met her husband Robert on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend in the Fall of 1980 and it was love at first site! Barb and Bob went on to be joined together under the Lord in Holy Matrimony on June 15 th , 1982, at Kawkawlin Community Church in Kawkawlin MI. They shared nearly 40 years of marriage together.

Barb had a natural knack for numbers and worked most of her life as an accountant starting back in 1973 and Du-All Activity Center in Bay City MI. She continued using those talents as the Treasurer for the 1 st and 4 th Republican Congressional Districts, Treasurer for the Gladwin Republican Party, as well as the President of the American Legion Post 171 Ladies Auxiliary in Gladwin MI. In her free time, she enjoyed off-roading and trail riding siting shotgun to Bob in their dune buggies or alongside on their snowmobiles.

Barb was best known for her infectious smile, ability to spread joy and to always have a kind word for everyone she met regardless of the challenges she may have been facing personally.

Left to cherish Barb’s memory are her husband Robert “Bob” Schafer; children: James “Jim””Happy” (Kelly) Gilmore US Navy Ret. of Huffman TX, Robert “Robby” Gilmore of Gladwin MI, Troy (Andrea) Schafer of Bay City MI. Todd (Emily) Schafer of Bay City MI.; grandchildren: Candace Purdom (Blake Ant) of Sherman TX. Mathew (Janie) Schafer of Owosso MI, Michael (Tacia) Schafer of Bay City MI., Allyson Schafer of Bay City MI., Justin Schafer of Bay City MI.; great-grandchildren: Gavin Schafer, Ryder Schafer, Clayton Thomas Purdom; brother: Larry Hetherington of Pinconning MI.; best friend of 70 years Sandy Hebert.

She is preceded in death by her parents and loving stepfather Eugene Stachowski.

Honoring her wishes will be cremated and there will be a memorial service planned for a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home, Gladwin MI.
