Fred R. Garrett, 79, of Alger, Michigan, passed away on Friday, February 10, 2017. He was born on February 26, 1937, the son of John W. & Eva Marie (Dube) Garrett in Sault St. Marie, Michigan. He was a veteran of the United States Army, proudly serving his country from 1960-1962 and also served in the United States Coast Guard. He was employed by General Motors, Flint, Michigan until his retirement. On August 15, 1987, he married Ann Elder in Alger, Michigan. Fred resided in Alger for the past 30 years, and enjoyed spending winters in Bonita Springs, Florida. He was a past president of the Secord Lake Eagles Aerie 4121 and was a member of the Ogemaw American Legion Post 103. Fred played hockey as a young man and always enjoyed the outdoors. His favorite hobbies included snowmobiling, ice fishing and golf. He was known to all as an avid sports fan and “do it yourselfer.”  Left to cherish his memory is his wife of nearly 30 years: Ann Garrett of Alger, Michigan; daughter: Kristen Brandt of Johnsburg, Illinois; sons: Eric (Connie) Bjornstad of Corona, California; Curt (Thu-Ha) Bjornstad of Phoenix, Arizona; Andy (Autumn) Bjornstad of St. Clair Shores, Michigan. He is also survived by his 6 grandchildren: Megan Michel, Chance, Drake, Autumn, Drew and Ally Bjornstad. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Jim Garrett, Lorne Garrett, Mildred Greene, and Floyd Garrett. Honoring his wishes, cremation will take place. Memorial Services with Military Honors will be conducted on Sunday, June 11, 2017, 1:00 P.M. at the F.O.E. Secord Lake Eagles Aerie 4121.  Inurnment will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan. Memorial Contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org .
