James Vernon Mercer

James Vernon Mercer, 82, of Beaverton, Michigan, passed away at his home on Friday, June 24, 2016. He was born the son of Vernon and Josie (Kintner) Mercer on January 5, 1934 in Beaverton. He married Shirley Ostrowsky on July 23, 1955 in Harrison, Michigan. He was a veteran of the United States Army, proudly serving his country during the Korean Conflict. He was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County where he was a member of F.O.E Albright Shores Aerie 3655. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. James was a retiree from Dow Hemlock Semiconductor. Left to cherish his memory are his lovely wife of 60 years, Shirley Mercer; his two sons: Dan (Jean) Mercer of Gladwin, Layne (Nikki) Mercer of Beaverton; daughter: Toni (Ted) Thayer of Beaverton; and sister: Coralie Cassiday of Florida. His children blessed him with 11 beautiful grandchildren and four wonderful great grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; son Kelly Mercer; grandson: Kristopher Mercer; brother: Bill Mercer; and five sisters: Betty Sutherland, Dola Kleinhardt, Mary Ellen Brown, Barbara Sharp and Dorothy Baldwin. Memorial Services will be conducted by Rev. Ron Vredeveld on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home in Beaverton, Michigan. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 from 9:00-11:00 A.M. at the funeral home.
